Right of Way (ROW) Safety

Two personnel in personal protective equipment (PPE) perform rail work at Cabot Yard

The MBTA Right of Way (ROW) consists of all tracks where our trains and authorized rail equipment operate, including ten feet from the center of track in any direction. The ROW also includes sidings and yards, where trains and construction equipment are stored.

Anyone who needs to access the ROW is required to take training comprised of an online pre-requisite course and an 8-hour in-person class, divided into a classroom lecture and a practical component, in order to receive a ROW Certification Card with a RAC sticker. This includes all employees, contractors, and anyone else who is requesting ROW access for any reason.

All requirements for ROW certification page can be found on the ROW Safety Training page.
