MBTA Releases Draft Environmental Assessment for North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement Project

Posted on December 6, 2024

The MBTA will host a virtual public hearing on January 2, 2025, at 6 PM.

The MBTA today announced the release of its Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement Project. The EA is available on the MBTA website.

The North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement Project will replace the North Station Draw One Bridge, which crosses over the Charles River, to bring it to a state of good repair and increase safety for riders taking the Haverhill, Lowell, Newburyport/Rockport, and Fitchburg Commuter Rail lines. The drawbridge’s current two moveable spans and four tracks will be upgraded to include three moveable spans and increase the number of tracks to six.

In September 2024, the MBTA was awarded $472,300,616 – its largest federal award to date – from the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program (MEGA) as part of the Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant program for the Project. In November 2024, the MBTA also hosted an industry forum in support of the landmark $1.2 billion Project.

The Draft EA was recently completed to analyze and describe potential impacts associated with the Project. The public is welcomed and encouraged to review the Draft EA and provide comments to the MBTA:

  • The MBTA will host a virtual public hearing via Zoom on January 2, 2025, at 6 PM. More information is available at mbta.com/events.
  • Emailed comments will be accepted until noon on January 6, 2025, and can be sent to DrawOne@mbta.com.
